6A SUTHERLAND RAILWAY

The railway was authorised in 1865 and merged into the Highland Railway in 1884. It opened from Bonar Bridge to Golspie in 1868. It remains open throughout although a number of intermediate stations closed to passengers and/or goods in the 1960s.

Station openings
Most stations opened with the line on 18/4/1868, but Culrain was opened on 1/7/1870.

Closures
The Mound closed to passengers in 1960, as did Rogart, although the latter was reopened as an unstaffed halt the following year. Goods services were withdrawn from most stations in 1964. The remaining stations remain open, with goods facilities at Ardgay, Lairg and Golspie.
